Conquering Mount Pinatubo

It was love at first sight yet again! I don't mind trekking for more than 2 hours on a rocky terrain to get a sight of paradise! I will never get tired. Not at this age! :)

We left Manila at around 3am via a public bus in Cubao. By 6am we're already in Tarlac. From Tarlac bus terminal, we had to travel by tricycle (Philippine tuktuk) for another 1.5 hours more to the local tourism office where we had to pay the fees. From there we start the 4x4 ride to the crater lake, which takes approximately 1-2 hours.

The 4x4 jeep can only accommodate us up to a certain point because as you get near the crater, the rocks and boulders get huge, and the only way to go about these is by trekking. It was around 8am when we started walking - it's still cold, the sun has just started showing up, so walking was not much of a hassle. Actually, you'd enjoy taking selfies and groupies because of the majestic views of the skies and huge rock walls in your background.

By 10am, we're already at this camp with nipa huts where you can rest and refresh for a while, have snacks, or take a short nap. It would tale about 20 minutes more to get to the world-renowned volcano crater. The excitement intensifies!!

20 minutes later...

My jaw droppped, LITERALLY when I saw the view...

Another love at first sight moment! I finally got to see THE majestic Mount Pinatubo crater lake, in the flesh! It was surreal and heart-stopping.

After a lot of picture taking and sight-seeing, we cooked our lunch, ate, a few more photo shoots, and started our descent. We stayed at the crater for about 2 hours. That's more than enough to appreciate the beauty of what was once a fierce peak.

By 5pm, we're back at the tourism office. And if you're wondering if there are rest rooms around, yes, there are locals offering rest rooms/shower rooms for a fee.

At the end of the day, everything was all worth it.

Traveling is therapeutic. It teaches you the basic values of life - patience, courage, value for relationship/friendship, love for the environment; that as you travel and explore the four corners of our earth, you get to appreciate life, even the smallest things. Something you will never pick up if you keep locking yourself at your comfort zone.

Just go ahead. You will never know what could be on the other side. :)

Surigao del Sur: Three Philippine Gems Unlocked!

So we've just finished another #WonderfulMindanao trip! This time, we went out exploring a couple more hidden Philippine gems around Surigao del Sur.

Surigao del Sur is a province in the Philippines located along the northeastern coast of Mindanao facing the Pacific Ocean. It is home to the famous Enchanted River (Hinatuan River)—a river so mysterious, no one knows how deep it is, Tinuy-an Falls—tagged as the "Little Niagara of the Philippines", and Britania Group of Islands—a group of islets that boasts powdery white sand and beautiful sand bars.

If you plan on doing the same trip, which I strongly suggest you do, you may check out our detailed itinerary at the end of this post.

Britania Group of Islands

I have never imagined white sands, peaceful beaches, and a relaxing swim under the sun when I said yes to this trip. Who would have thought Surigao del Sur has this piece of paradise, most people only think they'll find in Boracay or Palawan?

Britania Group of Islands in San Agustin boasts of 24 beautiful islets scattered all throughout the island complex as if some nature fairy landscaped it. And yes, these islands are surrounded by creamy white sands!

Enchanted River

Located at the town of Hinatuan is a majestic river that attracts tourists from all over, not only because of its breath-taking beauty that will leave you speechless, but also of some unexplained mysteries. Aside from the fact that no diver has ever reached the bottom of the Enchanted River, nobody has ever caught a fish in this river even though the schools of huge and fat fish you see swimming around look calm and gentle. Enchanted indeed!

Tinuy-an Falls

Another popular tourist destination in Surigao del Sur lies at the town of Bislig. Tinuy-an Falls, known as the "Niagara Falls" of the Philippines, is a 4-level white water curtain about 55 meters high. It holds the record as the widest waterfalls in the Philippines.

The Floating Restaurant, Mövenpick Resort & Spa

Mactan Island is just one of the many tourist magnet destinations in the province of Cebu because of its beautiful beaches and breath-taking views of mountains and coastlines. And if it's your first time to visit the province and you want to quickly jump off a white-sand beach, Mövenpick Resort & Spa formerly Hilton Cebu Resort & Spa is one the best near-airport hotel choices. Yes, Mövenpick is just a few kilometers away (a roughly 10-minute drive) from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, both of which lie in the Lapu Lapu city territory. It also very close to the Mactan Shrine where the famous statue of Lapu Lapu is erected.

There are actually a lot of hotel options along the eastern coastline of Cebu. Some of the neigboring hotels of Mövenpick are Shangri-la Mactan and Be Resorts, to name a few.

Aside from the private beach, there is also a large pool and a floating restaurant walking distance along the coastline. During the night, you'll get serenaded by live music performances in the open-air bar and restaurant of the hotel. And of course, one important requirement for the earthlings in today's generation, internet access- yes, there's FREE WIFI access everywhere. In fact, you can still get a strong wifi signal even when you're on the farthest side of the shore.

The room rates? Well, knowing it's Mövenpick, it's really not cheap. But as I've said, since it's THE Mövenpick, their rates I guess is just reasonable, considering the awesome services and amenities. It's actually Mövenpick's first hotel venture in the Philippines. To know more about their room rates, check on their official website.

FYI: Mövenpick Resort & Spa has 246 rooms including 74 spa suites!

Subic in Olongapo, Zambales is known to most of us as a place to buy cheap imported goods because of the duty free shops that sprouted like mushrooms all over the former naval base; second: Subic is a place you would fall in love with if you are a fan of the sun and the beach. Yes, that's probably what Subic is best-known for, but there's more to that to tell you honestly. And I'm not talking about extreme sports, water adventure, zoo or whatever. This time, it's all about FOOD.

One of my recent discoveries in Subic is a restaurant/cafe you will surely love if you are a fan of anything meat especially of steak. Meat Plus Cafe, as the name implies, serves different kinds of meat dishes and is famous for its delicious and affordable steaks: Topsirloin steak, Tenderloin steak, New York steak and a whole lot more choices of burgers, pasta dishes, salads and pastries.

The place is not hard to find actually. It's literally few steps away from two duty free shops. And FYI, Meat Plus is already an institution here in SBMA and your visit to Subic will not be complete unless you dropped by at Meat Plus. It started its operation when Subic was still a US Naval Base which catered to American soldiers, and continuously satisfying the cravings of today's generation.

Meal prices range from Php200-400 depending on the set order. I ordered Roasted Beef Belly- delicious, yes, but I like the Grilled Pork Ribs more because the serving is huge. Here are some photos to drool over. :D

Nuvali and the Missing Kois, Sta. Rosa Laguna

When visiting Laguna, I'm sure you've heard of this popular place called Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, developed by the Ayala Land, Inc. The first thing that comes to my mind whenever I hear Nuvali are the Koi fishes! Yes, it has this man-made pond and it has hundreds of hungry koi fishes (see photo below) and you get to feed them. And no, I haven't seen them face to face yet-- sad to say, when I went there for the first time last month, the pond is under renovation and it's all drained up, so no koi fishes for me. Well, I can always go back as soon as the renovation is done.

What I like about Nuvali, just like any other Ayala Land projects, is that it is filled with greenery, thus the free access to fresh air and nature. Nuvali Evoliving as what they call it, combines family, recreation and work all in one community centered to preserving and caring for the environment to make sure there will be more left for the next generation. I guess we should put more like this all over the Philippines, don't you guys think?

It's been just a few days since the Department of Tourism launched its 2012 campaign. And its new slogan "It's more fun in the Philippines" I can say has been successful since inception because it has created buzz online, leaving the netizens hooked into digging up their creative minds to come up with their own versions More fun in the Philippines.

And, yes, I am among those who got hooked. Today, I searched on my archives, downloaded the Harabara (the official font) and did quick editing to come up with my own version of It's more fun in the Philippines. I will do more of these as I travel and explore the Philippines. It's viral, it's addicting and IT'S FUN! Try it! :P

Subic: Beach Weekend and All Things Edible!

Subic, SBMA, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, beach, Swell Bar and Cafe, Paddle Boarding, Paddleboarding

There is nothing more satisfying than to spend an entire weekend under the sun, in a beach and pig-out as if there's no tomorrow- and spice it up with the company of some great friends! That's what we exactly did few weeks ago in Subic. Francis, a good friend of mine licked this trip into shape way back, but it's just recently that all of us got to finally agree with the schedule. I've been to Subic a couple of times but this experience is one hell of a fun trip! The beach and I are really not good friends but right after this experience, I am missing it so badly. :(

From Manila, we took the bus going to Subic. It's a roughly 3-hour trip. Thanks to my Huawei pocket wifi; traveling long hours on the road is not much of a struggle anymore. It's touchdown Subic Bay Freeport Zone at around 10:30AM- just in time for lunch. Haha! After a few hours of walking and wandering around, we finally reached our destination - Swell Bar and Cafe.

Swell Bar and Cafe is not the usual "bar" or "cafe" that you're probably thinking. It's a few steps away from the beach and radiates that laid-back, easygoing feel as if you're living the life of a freewheeling urban youth- carefree, happy-go-lucky cheerfully irresponsible (haha!). Well, that's how we were during our stay there. It's breezy; the smell of the beach is just so inviting. By the way, Swell offers paddle boarding experience for those who wish to enjoy the beach in a new and exciting way.

Thanks to Gianne Montelibano, Swell Bar and Cafe's operations manager, for giving us a party-fun, food-blast and booze-filled welcome. Here are some of our random Subic photos. Will share more on my next blog posts.

Visita Iglesia: More Fun in the Philippines

$

Holy Week is the time of the year here in the Philippines where aside from reflecting and commemorating the last week of Lent in preparation for the Easter, people also look back at the history of the country. Visita Iglesia (Church Visit), one important Holy Week tradition in the Philippines is a common practice which started back in the 70's. People, especially Catholic devotees, hop from church to church to pray and recite all fourteen stations of the cross.

Visiting different churches in the Philippines will make you realize how rich the Filipino culture is. Each church is different and all have their own unique history. Though the years, the Visita Iglesia has evolved into a more open and sensitive tradition. That despite our differences in beliefs, everyone is welcome to enter and seek fortress in the house of God.

Here are some photos of churches in the Philippines that I've already visited. All photos are processed using the Instagram app. Follow me on instagram @enjayneer!

When visiting the Philippines, the northern part of the country is usually one of the many places tourists are flabbergasted of. And among the many tourist-friendly provinces up north is Ifugao. Travelers flock here all year round to enjoy the magnificent panorama- high mountains, fresh air and most importantly the breathtaking pillars, the Rice Terraces.

The Rice Terraces in Banaue, a municipality of Ifugao province, is among the UNESCO World Heritage sites because of its unparalleled beauty. Often dubbed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World", the 2000-year old Banaue Rice Terraces is one of the country's pride to humanity. And for me, I call these ingenious architectures as the "Stairways to Heaven" because as you can see, the mountains were literally carved down to form these giant stairs looking like giant stair steps from afar. The ancient tribes of Ifugao sculpted these terraces with their own exceptional agricultural tools and skills; indeed a representation of the natives' distinct culture and tradition as well as their unique identity as Filipinos.

I was lucky to be able to visit this UNESCO World Heritage site and it makes me even more proud to be a Filipino. It is a roughly 8-hour drive from Manila to the municipality of Banaue and I tell you, it's quite a bumpy and zizaggy ride up the mountains. Good thing we have a skilled driver who can swiftly take sharp turns smoothly. And the fun part of our trip is yet to be told... After we had our lunch at the Banaue Hotel, that’s when our mini adventure began. We all hopped on top of the jeepney and went around cliffs and mountain tops to explore the beautiful Banaue Rice Terraces. We went down on one of the mountains to meet face to face the rice terraces and the natives. Some of them even offered us to try their native dresses! Cool!

Overall, it was one hell of trip up there. Looking forward to visiting this paradise again. Go visit Banaue soon and see for yourself nature’s beauty at its most serene state.

Temple of Wonder: Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat Temple, Siem Reap, Cambodia, Khmer Architecture, Carvings, Structure, Sculpture, Cambodian Temples, Asia, Religious Monument
Angkor Wat, Cambodia's most famous temple is actually the world's largest religious monument. This tourist-magnet Khmer temple complex is nothing but enchanting! It's my first time to visit Cambodia and after seeing Angkor Wat and the many majestic temples all over Siem Reap, I can say it's love at first sight.

The Angkor Wat's intricate architecture is just one proof that an advanced and sophisticated Khmer civilization already existed over 800 years ago.

The main temple of the Angkor Wat is 213 feet high, same height as the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. What's even surprising is that it took only 32 years to build this massive structure. And it has a lot more stones compared to other ancient structures elsewhere.

I wonder how it feels like living during the ancient times, having to climb this high just to get inside the temples. Our tour guide said that the reason why the steps to the temples are steep and high is to represent the difficulty of getting into the kingdom of heaven.

Very detailed and perfectly crafted carvings. And you'll see a lot of this all over the temple. To see it is to believe it.

Singapore Nightscapes: The Lion City at Night

When I visited Singapore early this year, the first time I did on our first night was a long exposure night shoot. We did an impromptu photowalk starting from Geylang, where our hotel was. Geylang, if you would ask a local, or someone who travels frequently to Singapore would definitely give you an evil smirk. Why? It is the "red-light" district of the old Singapore. There are not too many tall buildings here but a lot of night pubs, hawkers and hmmm clubs for adults.

Geylang, Night life, Long Exposure, Singapore, Night, Nightscape, Shoot

Just near Geylang is Sims Avenue, a street we frequently traversed since we had to walk a couple of blocks from our hotel to Aljunied MRT station and vice versa. A quite busy street in this area because you will see a lot of hawker restaurants and bargain stores around- from Chinese, Indians to Middle Easterners. Perfect if you wanna do an affordable food trip and have a taste of different cuisine.

Sims Avenue, Street, Long Exposure, Merlion, Singapore, Night, Nightscape, Shoot

Of course, the ever popular building in Singapore - Marina Bay Sands Hotel. I guess I don't need any further introduction on this. You haven't been to Singapore if you haven't had a picture of you taken  with Marina Bay Sands Hotel behind you.

Marina Bay, Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Merlion, Singapore, Night, Nightscape, Shoot

And just in front of Marina Bay Sands Hotel lies Raffles Place, located at the Central Area where you will see some of the tallest buildings and structures of Singapore. Before it was developed into a commercial area, the whole expanse was actually a hill which was then used to reclaim some areas at the southern part of the Singapore River.

Raffles Place Buildings, Merlion, Singapore, Night, Nightscape, Shoot

And the last destination for my Singapore nightscape photowalk was the bachelor-friendly, booze capital, Clarke Quay. There are a lot of high-end restaurants, bars and nightclubs around. You will mostly see bachelors, young adults, group of friends and couples hanging out here.

Now it's even easier for everyone to fly to Singapore. AirAsia Philippines has recently launched its Clark to Singapore route with daily flights departing at 6:10am. The inaugural flight took off on December 15, 2012 at Clark International Airport (DMIA). Prior to the inaugural flight, a press launch was held at Widus Resort and Casino at Clark attended by AirAsia officials, bloggers (us! haha), members of the media, DMIA officials, representative from the Singapore Tourism Board and many more. I am just lucky enough to be one of the firsts to experience AirAsia's first flight to Singapore and tour around all expense paid!

"We chose Clark, because Clark is our home", says Maan Hontiveros, CEO of AirAsia Philippines during the launch. AirAsia, for your information, is the only local airline company based in Clark.

"It doesn't matter what day or month, we guarantee you good deals at AirAsia.", says Freddy Herrera, AirAsia PH's head for commerial.

My fellow bloggers and I had fun at the launch party. It was a night of singing and dancing. Well, AirAsia wants everyone to sing their way to Singapore! :D

Right after the launch, we checked in at Tune Hotel, Angeles so we could relax and get ready for the 6:10am inaugural flight the next day.

Royal Plaza on Scotts Hotel, Singapore

I went to Singapore for the first time in January last year - but only to meet and hangout with friends. So I never really had the luxury of time to explore around and get the feel of a first-time tourist. But in December of that same year, the universe conspired and brought me back to Singapore; this time I was able to really see the real Singapore. :D

We stayed at the luxurious Royal Plaza on Scotts Hotel, one of the most renowned 5-star hotels in Singapore, located at the center of the city and surrounded by shopping centers, restaurants and key landmarks of the Lion City. In short, a very strategic location for tourists and shopaholics, especially for first time visitors. In fact, it is just a 5-minute walk from Orchard MRT station.

As you enter, you'll be welcomed by the grandeur hotel lobby with its famous giant candle art displayed at the center. The hotel, by the way holds the title "Asia Pacific's Best Independent Hotel" for six consecutive years already by TTG Travel Awards.

The rooms look elegant. It has modern furnishings, comfortable bed and a huge bathroom. We got the Superior Room with the basic 5-star features, free wifi internet, mini bar and an in-room coffee machine. What I like most is the mini bar and the various free complimentary hot drinks! :D

I also loved the buffet breakfast at Carousel, the hotel's award-winning buffet restaurant. It is divided into dining sections - there's a sushi bar, a bakery, buffet counters that serve Asian and Western cuisine, a salad, and a dessert section.

I would certainly recommend Royal Plaza on Scotts especially if you are visiting Singapore with your family. The wonderful experience I've had at RP is something that will keep me coming back again and again. Thanks for an unforgettable second time in Singapore! I'll be back soon! :)

You may check out Royal Plaza on Scotts on AirAsia Go Philippines' website (just click the link :D) and book it right away with just three simple steps for a hassle-free Singapore vacation. One advantage of doing this is you get to book your airfare, hotel and even tours all at once, especially now that AirAsia Philippines has its daily flights to Singapore from Clark.

Airbus A320 Sharklet: World's First Eco-friendly Aircraft

[Clark International Airport, 16 January 2013] AirAsia reached another milestone by being the first operator of the newest Airbus A320 equipped with fuel-saving wing-tips. This special type of Airbus A320 features a sharklet instead of a winglet, making it the world's first environment-friendly aircraft. These newly designed wing-tip devices reduce fuel consumption and emission by improving the aerodynamics of the aircraft significantly. It can save up to 4% worth of fuel bills or 1000 tons of carbon per year per aircraft.

CIAC president Victor Jose Luciano and AirAsia Philippines CEO Maan Hontiveros were present during the arrival and welcoming event. The captain of this new special aircraft told Ms. Hontiveros "It's like driving a new sports car!"

AirAsia, for your information is the biggest customer of Airbus under their A320 aircrafts. More photos here.

Look at the wing-tip. That's the sharklet, called as such probably because of the resemblance to a shark's fin.

Bangkok: A First-timer's Perspective

Bangkok, just like any other city I've visited in Asia, is a busy yet diversely rich district in terms of people, culture, cuisine and so much more! It's far from the usual city where tourists visit for modern architectural wonders, luxurious shopping and sky-high leisure.

When you're in Bangkok, you'll be fascinated at how mellow and friendly people are. If you've experienced the MRT train of Singapore, you can quickly tell the difference when you're in a BTS train in Bangkok- it's less stressful, light and uncomplicated.

People in general are approachable and are always willing to offer help especially to tourists (though the language barrier is a little challenging because unlike in the Philippines where almost everyone can speak English, in Bangkok, you'll have to use your 'sign language' skills to survive hehe). We rode the tuktuk from BTS Chongnonsi Station to FuramaXclusive Hotel in Sathorn. I politely asked our tuktuk driver if I can have a photo taken with him..

..and he cheerfully posed like this... :D

When you're inside the train, you will notice that Thais don't talk that much or if ever they speak with someone, they do it in a very soft tone.

One of the things you should't miss to encounter when in Bangkok are the temples! The intricate, detailed architecture of these places of worship is impressive.

Thai nightlife is also one of a kind and it can get wild too! :D If you are up for a booze night or clubbing, you should stay round Sukhumvit or Silom Soi 2 because this is where the Bangkok night life is centered. Mobile bars are also everywhere so you don't have to worry about finding a nice play to have a beer or two.

Another great thing about Bangkok is STREET FOOD! These Thai sausages are a taste of heaven! I guess I'll have to write a separate blog post for my Thai food experience. Watch out for it.

Saigon City Tour, Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon, Vietnam, Vincom, Notre Dame, City Hall, Opera House, Can Tho Bridge, Post Office, Airport

What I like about staying in Vietnam is the cost of living. It is quite cheap here compared to other neighboring countries like Thailand, Cambodia and Singapore; even cheaper than in the Philippines. Therefore, I can say that Vietnam is a back-packer friendly destination because you can get a nice hotel at the backpacker area for less than 20 US dollars a night, or cheaper if you are lucky enough to find a comfy bed space. Also, Vietnamese food is so rich and unique. Authentic Vietnamese 'Pho' is to die for!

Tip when visiting Saigon: Get a hotel at the backpacker area (Pham Ngu Lao street). Night life, booze and souvenir items are all there; and oh, the cheap authentic North Face backpack stores are in this district as well) You can even get a Saigon beer here for 10,000 Dong (that's about 50 US cents!). Around 80% of the people here are tourists, and boy, everyone here knows how to party! I suggest you walk around at night (yes, it's safe!) and explore the many bars and clubs around the area.

One of the best ways to roam around is a bicycle; well motorbikes are the most popular, but since I don't have a license to drive in Vietnam, I got the good'ol bike. And I think I like the bike more than the motocycle because you can easily lift it when passing by monkey bridges and small canals.

#SHIFTDavao: The Power of Social Media

It was an honor and privilege to be invited to become one of the speakers to the first and biggest social media conference in Mindanao, alongside the big names like Maria Ressa, Bianca Gonzales, and Atty. Yves Gonzales.

I talked about how Travel, Photography, and Social Media helped me achieve all the good stuff that happened in my life. I believe that by sharing what I did and what I have accomplished, people would realize that it's just not all about earning money, getting a high-position white-collared job, or being successful in one's career. I wanted my audience to inhale and digest: life is about doing what makes you happy, maximizing each and every day that we have, and then from there, you learn, make yourself better, and eventually, you become that one person you are destined to become. That's life.

At the last part of my talk, I told my audience: "Do one thing everyday that scares you." This is one of my favorite quotes, and I always try to apply this everyday. It doesn't matter how far or near you are from your goal. What's important is you are getting there. Little by litte, one little step at a time, and it will take you to where you want to be. :)

The Blue Ginger Restaurant, Singapore

The famous durian chendol

One of the many known facts about Singapore is it has a rich and unique cuisine, with varied influences from Chinese, Malay, Indian and other neighboring countries. As a traveler and a blogger, and just like any other tourist who’s exploring a new place or country for the first time, I always make sure I find that original, authentic taste of the food unique to that place.

“What food is this place known for?”

“What do you recommend for us to eat?”

“What’s their national food?”

“Any exotic dish?”

Each country is unique. Each cuisine has its own unique story you can only find out by immersing your taste buds to it. Let me take you on a culinary tour to one of Singapore’s famous restaurants, The Blue Ginger Restaurant.

With Singapore foodtrip buddies, Meg, Khai and sister, and Melai.

The name Blue Ginger was derived from a key ingredient in Peranakan (Straits-Chinese) cooking known as Nam Kiong in Cantonese, or Galangal in Malay. Peranakan is a culture which evolved through the intermarriage between early Chinese settlers and the indigenious Malays in the areas surrounding Singapore in the 1800s. As a result of this union, a whole new culinary flavor took form.

Kueh Pie Tee

Kueh Pie Tee is a thin and crispy pastry tart shell filled with a spicy, sweet mixture of thinly sliced vegetables and prawns. It is a popular Peranakan dish. The main filling is shredded Chinese turnips and carrots.

Beef Rendang

My favorite! Beef Rendang - tender beef cubes prepared in rich coconut milk spiced with ginger, lemongrass, lime leaves and a dash of curry powder. I've had my share of beef rendang from different Asian restaurants but this from Blue Ginger is probably one of the best.

Sotong Kunyit

Sotong Kunyit - fresh squid stir-fried with turmeric powder, flavoured with tamarind.

Ngo Heong

Ngo Heong - deep-fried spring rolls with minced pork, shrimp and water chestnuts served with sweet soy dip.

Udang Lada

Udang Goreng Tauyu Lada - sauteed prawns with pepper in sweet dark soya sauce.

Juhu Kangkong

Juhu Kangkong - Stir-fried kangkong with cuttlefish and sambal

Seabass Gulai

Seabass Gulai - fresh seabass simmered in spicy tamarind gravy flavoured with lemongrass.

Ayam Panggang

Ayam Panggang - deboned chicken thigh and drumstick flavoured with coconut milk rich in exotic spices and grilled to perfection.

Ayam Limau Purut

Ayam Limau Purut - chicken simmered in a spice ladened tamarind mix.

Blue Ginger is definitely a must-try when in Singapore! Great food, great service; just perfect for first time tourists. If you want to have a taste of Singapore, Blue Ginger can sum it up for you on your table! I'd give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars! :)

The Blue Ginger Restaurant is located at Tanjong Pagar Road. It's a 3-minute walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station.

Naval Aviator Training Squadron NATS, Naval Air Group, Philippine Navy, Sangley Point Naval Air Base, Cavite, Britten-Norman Islander

It was one of the most precious and memorable days of my life. I was invited by photography guru and regular Manila Bulletin contributor, Roy Van Morales to accompany him to Sangley Naval Air Base (Naval Base Heracleo Alano), Philippine Navy for an aerial photography workshop. Roy has been conducting photography lessons to the different service branches of the Armed Forces and now invited by the Naval Aviation Training Squadron of the Naval Air Group of the Philippine Navy to conduct a workshop to the naval pilots.

It was a two-day workshop. On the first day, we did classroom lecture and taught the basic functions of a DSLR. The second day was the actual aerial shoot. Roy and I accompanied the naval pilots in an aircraft for their aerial photography practical exam.

And the most EXCITING and FUN part for me? -- THE FLYING!

From Sangley Naval Base in Cavite, we took off via a Philippine Navy Cessna 172 4-seater plane. Since it can only accommodate 4 people (including the pilot and the co-pilot), only one navy pilot who will do the actual aerial shoot was with me at the back seat. Roy, on the other hand was at the 8-seater Britten-Norman Islander plane. Since it's an aerial photography and we needed good subjects, we asked the pilots to get a nice view for us. So for about an hour, we were just flying around Mt. Samat and some islets around Bataan. We landed at Subic Bay International Airport at around lunch time. From there, Roy and I switched planes. I transferred to the Britten-Norman Islander 8-seater plane going back to Cavite Naval Base.

As I kept on saying, it was a priceless experience. Thanks to Roy for inviting me over. Thanks to NATS Commander, Lt Rowene Colita PN for this opportunity; and thanks for the goodies too! :) Thanks to the Naval Aviation Training Squadron of the Philippine Navy for the awesome and priceless experience. Having to ride for the first time a Cessna 172 plane and a Britten-Norman Islander all in one day from Cavite to Subic and back is something that will be forever etched in my memories.

You guys are awesome! And thanks for the comfortable room and a bunk bed. See you next year for our next photography workshop!

Here are some photos and videos. More photos posted on my Facebook.

What to see in Puerto Princesa Palawan

$

I've been showered with a lot of free time lately or should I say, a very flexible work schedule, thus all these travels, local and abroad. In 2012 alone, I have visited 4 countries: Singapore (twice), Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. And a lot of trips around the Philippines last year as well!

One of the Philippine cities I was able to visit last year is the city of Puerto Princesa in Palawan. As a first timer in the province, I had quite a few expectations. So what I really planned to do was to just explore around, list down the things and places I find interesting, have a taste of the local cuisine and basically just go with the flow. Asking around is free anyway.

It was a short 3 day trip and I think 3 days is just enough to go around and explore what Puerto Princesa city has to offer. Listed below, in random order are the key places, which for me are must-visit/must-try for first timers in Puerto Princesa.

1. Baker's Hill
Baker's Hill is known for their delicious cakes and pastries especially the hopia. Tourists often visit here to buy pasalubong. They also serve lunch and dinner, and mind you, it comes in big servings.

2. Mitra's  Farm
A perfect spot to see the view and take panoramic shot of the coast of Palawan. On the right side you will see the coast, while a luscious green scenery is seen on the left. There are also horses for rent if you are up for a horseback ride adventure.

3. Crocodile Farm
Known as the Palawan Wildlife and Rescue Center, but it is more popularly known to locals as the Crocodile Farm. It is actually a research institute dedicated to crocodiles but it is open to tourists for public viewing of the crocodiles.

4. Tamilok
The shipworm or tamilok is an exotic Palawan delicacy. Contrary to popular belief, the tamilok is not a worm. It belongs to the oyster family. The tamilok is a mangrove-infesting mollusk, elongated, looks transparent and actually tastes like oyster. It is dipped in vinegar and eaten raw. Definitely a must-try! More photos here.

5. Ugong Rock Cave
Ugong Rock Cave is a spot for spelunking and rock climbing. Once you reach the top, you have to zipline all the way down to exit. Climbing is a bit of a challenge because you need to squeeze in and some cases, crawl to fit into the tiny openings inside the cave. It is an extreme experience and I do not recommend this for the faint-hearted.

6. Pandan Island
When you do the Honda Bay island hopping, be sure not to miss Pandan Island. It is one of the most serene islands of Honda Bay. Here you can do swimming, snorkelling, and fish feeding.

7. The Sleeping Giant
You will see the image of a sleeping giant while on the way to the Puerto Princesa Underground River. See the forehead, the nose and the chin? Be sure to take a photo of it! :D

8. Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park
Popularly known as the Underground River, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is the highlight of the city. A UNESCO World Heritage site and recently awarded as one of the 7 Wonders of Nature, the underground river is a proof that mother nature is alive and majestic! The river is 8 kilometers long, making it as the world's longest underground river. The inside is magical. You will see a lot of rock formations that resemble figures and images of humans and animals.
